Learn whether washi tape is acid-free and safe for scrapbooking and photos. We break down the facts and share a bunny-themed roll that fits the bill.
Quick Answer
Many washi tapes are acid-free because they are made from natural fibers like kozo, but not all. Always check the product description for 'acid-free' or 'lignin-free' labels. The Bunches of Bunnies 15mm Washi Tape from Paper Wilderness is a safe bet for scrapbooking.
What Does Acid-Free Mean for Scrapbooking?
Acid-free paper and tape won't yellow or become brittle over time, which is critical for preserving photos and memorabilia. Acidic materials can cause fading, staining, and deterioration of your cherished images. For scrapbookers, using acid-free supplies is a must to keep albums looking fresh for decades.
How to Verify Washi Tape Is Acid-Free
Look for explicit claims like 'acid-free' or 'archival safe' in the product description. Reputable brands, including Paper Wilderness, often state these details. If a product doesn't mention it, contact the seller or choose a tape that does. The Bunches of Bunnies tape, for example, is described with watercolor illustrations on a yellow background, and its packaging includes clear labeling that helps you confirm its safety for scrapbooking.
Verdicts
- Claim: All washi tape is acid-free: Not true. While traditional Japanese washi uses natural fibers, many modern mass-market tapes contain adhesives or dyes that may be acidic. Always read the product details before using in scrapbooks.
- Claim: Washi tape is safe for photos: Only if labeled acid-free and lignin-free. Some tapes can transfer adhesive or cause discoloration over time. Stick to tapes with explicit archival-safe claims for photo projects.
- Claim: You can tell by looking or touching: You cannot. Acid-free status is a chemical property, not a visual or tactile one. Rely on manufacturer statements. Check the product description or packaging for 'acid-free' wording.
